Dr Shom Bhattacharjee

Dr Shom Bhattacharjee graduated from Monash University and completed his specialist training in Rheumatology at the Alfred Hospital, Monash Medical Centre and the Western Hospital. He has worked overseas at Barts Health and the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trusts, United Kingdom.

Shom has diverse rheumatological interests ranging from the management of inflammatory arthritis, connective tissue disease, vasculitis and gout. Shom has extensive experience in the inpatient care of patients with acute and chronic multi-system illnesses, and the peri-operative medical care of surgical patients.

Shom maintains a keen interest in musculoskeletal and sports medicine, deriving from a long-standing interest in personal fitness. His ongoing pursuits are tennis and weightlifting, in which he has been nationally competitive. Shom has advised athletes in multiple sports on training, nutrition, injury management and rehabilitative strategies. As a result, he has developed a holistic approach to his practice of medicine in general and musculoskeletal medicine in particular.

Shom has held consultant appointments at the Alfred and Western Hospitals, as well as Cabrini and Epworth Health, since 2011. He is actively engaged in the teaching and professional development of postgraduate trainee physicians, and has been an examiner for the College of Physicians for over a decade.  Shom is a supervisor of rheumatology trainees at the Alfred, and has won awards for his teaching of medical students.
